In 1981, Sixx founded Mötley Crüe with drummer Tommy Lee.

They were later joined by guitarist Mick Mars through an ad in the local newspaper, and singer Vince Neil, with whom Lee had attended high school.

He was replaced by former Ozzy Osbourne drummer Randy Castillo with whom they released a new album titled New Tattoo in 2000.

The group went on hiatus soon after before reuniting in 2004, during which Sixx declared himself sober.
