The town of Chincoteague, Virginia has a wide variety of private campgrounds that can accommodate family campers and organized groups. It is a great place to launch if doing a circumnavigation or looking for dolphin. There is a sign next to the ramp that a kayaker might easily miss if carrying ones boat from the parking lot. When navigating, use the Coast Guard's large radio towers as a guide. In Virginia, highway 50 will become route 13 south. Turn left (east) onto Chincoteague Road (route 175). Just before leaving the mainland and crossing over Queen Sound, turn right onto a little road. There is a small beach and porta-john on the south side of Thomas Point Park, just 1.2 miles west of the lighthouse on the north side of the mouth of the South River. Beverly Triton Beach Park Location: 1202 Triton Beach Road or 7920 Carvel Lane, Mayo 21106; Anne Arundel County ADC map 5537 A9 Phone: 410-222-1777 Date: Unexplored Directions: From the Baltimore beltway (highway 695), take highway 97 south to highway 50 east. Turn right (north) on Laurel Bowie Road (route 197). They are white from all the bird shit..the rocks are light in color too. Make sure you look back and take note of where you launched when you're on the water because the launch area doesn't stand out much when you're on the water. Take exit 22 to Aris Allen Boulevard (route 665) southeast. Turn right (south) at Solomons Island Road (route 2). Turn left (southeast) on Central Avenue East (route 214). Turn right (southwest) at Muddy Creek Road (route 468). Turn left at Galesville Road (route 255) and follow to end. Looking upstream (north), there appears to be quite a few downed trees but looking downstream (south), the river looks wider and clearer. It is also near the Baltimore Washington International (BWI) Airport and University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). In Virginia, highway 50 will become route 13 south. Turn left (east) onto Chincoteague Road (route 175). This is a scenic little pond that I checked out because it looked like it might flow into Chincoteague Channel. If you have to carry, it will be about a 100 meter carry from the lot. When returning from a trip, look for the "Cable Crossing" sign at the north end of the creek. I suppose if my hair was shorter, I wouldn't stand out so much. The next closest launch site is Jonas Green Park, Truxton Heights Park, and Sandy Point State Park, all about 4 miles away. Take exit 16 for Davidsonville Road (route 424) heading northwest. In 2015, a cartop boat launch was added in the park on Bodkin Creek. Note that this road is not the same Jones Station Road that intersects Governor Ritchie Highway further north. Office is open 0900-1700 daily but launching is 24 hour. Previously, one could launch at the small park next to the marina but launching is no longer permitted. I got a recording so I left a message, inquiring how much they charge to launch. Take exit 22 to Aris Allen Boulevard (route 665) southeast. Turn right (south) at Solomons Island Road (route 2). Parking for 10 vehicles and room for more near the barn. It may not be too far but just remember that you have to carry uphill after kayaking to get back to your car so consider bringing a kayak cart. Horn Point Street End Park Location: The corner of Chesapeake Avenue and Horn Point Drive in the Eastport area of Annapolis, Anne Arundel County ADC map 5417 D5; Google Maps coordinate 38.973259, -76.476523 Date: September 23, 2016 Directions: From the Baltimore beltway (highway 695), take highway 97 south to highway 50 east. It is best to paddle near the shore in Weems Creek since their rowing shells move like torpedoes. Once on the Patuxent River, go left to get to Jug Bay or right to go upstream. I reached out to them on June 24, 2017 and was told that there is a $15 parking fee and we can launch from their beach. Not sure what to do if you want to launch after hours. Take the Telegraph Road (route 170) exit, turning left (south) on Telegraph Road. Take exit 22 to Aris Allen Boulevard (route 665) southeast. Turn right (south) at Solomons Island Road (route 2). As of April 2012, there is a $5 fee for vehicles with trailers. Notes: About 30 minutes from Hanover in light traffic. To return on 295 south, take Waterview Avenue west and turn left on Annapolis Road (route 648). Restrooms near boat ramp but I've never seen them open. If this lot is filled, you can pay and park at the big parking lot on the west side of South Clinton Street, just south of Boston Street. This is a really crappy road (especially at the railroad track) so drive cautiously. Stay at least 50 meters from the shore to avoid lines from fishermen. Turn left at Gunpowder Falls State Park, Hammerman Area. There are 5 miles of hiking and biking trails with bike rentals available on the island. After about a quarter of a mile, take the right exit to Fort Armistead Road. Follow Fort Armistead Road about a mile and a half until it ends at Fort Armistead Park. Turn right (northeast) on Pulaski Highway (route 40). After crossing over the railroad tracks, Ebenezer Road turns into Quarters Road. As of June 2016, I found the following information: The South Cell of the park is supposedly open May through September, Thursdays through Mondays from 1100-1600. Take exit 1 to Hawkins Point Road, turning right (south) onto Quarantine Road. Keep going straight as it turns into Fort Smallwood Road (route 173). Take exit 67A to White Marsh Boulevard (route 43) east. Restrooms: Yes Drinking water: No Mainland parking: No information, suggested I contact North Point State Park. A lot has changed on the island since I wrote the above and I haven't been back in several years to see how things have changed. Fort Armistead Park Location: Baltimore, Baltimore County ADC map 44 F10; Anne Arundel County ADC map 4 D7 or map 4940 E7 Date: February 20, 2017 Directions: From where the Baltimore beltway (highway 695) and highway 95 meet, take highway 695 east (counterclockwise). If you want to get up close and personal with Fort Carroll, this is the best place to launch. Gunpowder River Location: Gunpowder Falls State Park, Hammerman Area, Baltimore County ADC map 39 B4 Date: May 29, 2004 Directions: From where the Baltimore beltway (highway 695) and highway 95 meet, take highway 95 northeast through the Fort Mc Henry Tunnel. Set up site and a ranger will come by to register you and collect a fee. The pilot of one, the Santo Antonio, was a Portuguese by the name of Esteban Gomez. A boat ramp license must be displayed by anyone using this launch site. This will ensure you have a place to park near the ramp. Access to Assateague Channel between Chincoteague Island and Assateague Island. Look for Matthews Market on the left side of route 13. Turn left (northeast) on Pierce Taylor Road (route 730). Public Ramp Date: September 12, 2005 Use the above directions to Chincoteague Island then continue with the below: Immediately after crossing the route 175 bridge to Chincoteague Island, turn right (southwest) onto Main Street. But one can paddle north for about 0.75 miles to access Cockle Creek on the west. Picnic tables, fire rings, no-fee showers, laundry room, and camp store. Toms Cove Visitor Center Location: Virginia side of Assateague Island Phone: 757-336-6577 Date: October 10, 2010 Use the above directions to Chincoteague Island then continue with the below: Immediately after crossing the route 175 bridge to Chincoteague Island, continue straight. Remain on this street heading east as it takes you across Assateague Channel then to Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. One might be able to fit 3 vehicles with the last backing in the others. After 91 miles, take exit 1A on the left to highway 68 west, to Cumberland. At the end of the ramp, turn left (east) onto Howard Street. Turn right (southeast) onto South Mechanic Street, route 51. Take exit 22 to Aris T Allen Boulevard (route 665) southeast. Beware of submerged boulders near the 3 radio towers. The public can access the Beverly Triton Beach Park without a vehicle permit by walking into the park and carrying or carting your boat 0.2 mile. If you drive a little further down Beachwood Park Road to the smaller , you'll see an entrance to an easier place to launch though the beach is almost non-existent. SERC is open to the public Monday through Saturday from 0900 to 1630. Date: Unexplored Notes: A co-worker of mine by the name of Randy S. Very limited hours but if you want to paddle out to Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse, then this ia a great place to launch. Cross over the Severn River Bridge then take exit 27 southeast to Governor Ritchie Highway (route 450). Launching here will put one at the mouth of the "big" Patapsco River. This is a good place to go if you want to launch at night since there are no signs saying you can't. Unfortunately, it is easier to launch on the downstream side on the southwest side of the bridge. This is not a good launch site but there are really very few options if you want to paddle on the Little Patuxent River. I expect they'd be happy to have you paddle in and eat. It is a flat 140 yard carry from the parking lot to the put-in so wheels are handy. Open to the public 0900 to 1630, Monday through Saturday, year-round, except on national holidays. It is suggested to make a $5 donation if launching. A year into the trip, Magellan promoted Alvaro de Mesquita to command the Santo Antonio. Conspiring with a few crewmen, Gomez slapped Mesquita in irons and turned the ship around. Gomez and his mutineers were eventually judged not guilty. In Virginia, highway 50 will become route 13 south. Turn left (east) onto Chincoteague Road (route 175). For more information, see Challenge Weekend 2010 and October 10, 2010. Paddling northeast between the islands will take you near the Assateague Lighthouse. In Virginia, highway 50 will become route 13 south. Follow for 0.7 miles to the end, just past Point Breeze Lane. After about 150 meters, turn right at the American Legion Post 159. Or one can paddle north for 1.5 miles to access Mosquito Creek on the west. Best of all, if you want a good map of the island, this is the place to go. You will need to pay a fee to continue into the park. There really isn't room to park on the side of the road. This will turn into East Industrial Boulevard, route 51. Aris T Allen Boulevard eventually turns into Forest Drive. At the Bay Forest Shopping Center, turn left onto Edgewood Road. On return trip, look for water tower to find your way back. If you drive a vehicle in the park, you need to purchase a yearly vehicle permit sold at Quiet Waters Park for $75 each (as of 2013). Contact Quiet Waters Park at 410-222-1777 for more information. Beachwood Park Sometimes it is spelled "Beechwood." Location: 8320 Beachwood Park Road, Pasadena, Maryland 21122, Anne Arundel County ADC Map 9 D-12, 2009 ADC Map 5174 E-4. The trail is a little steep but you won't have to walk as far or make any tight turns. Note that this road also crosses over the Little Patuxent but that not this launch site. There is very little room but enough for an average width vehicle on the east side of the bridge on both sides of the road. There is a sandy area that makes an easy launch on the southeast side, about 30 meters from the road. I highly recommend NOT launching from here as there are numerous fallen trees. Carrs Wharf Location: 1001 Carrs Wharf Road, Mayo; Anne Arundel County ADC map 25 E13 or map 5536 G8 Phone: 410-222-7317 Date: May 15, 2015 Directions: From the Baltimore beltway (highway 695), take highway 97 south to highway 50 east. Chain-O-Hills Location: West end of Chain-O-Hills Road. This is a big, open area so be sure to check the weather report before launching. Several restaurants in the area include Thursday's Steak and Crab House and The Inn at Pirates Cove. I've been told that paddling downstream of this to Crain Highway (Route 3) in Crofton is a real bitch because of all the downfalls but I know paddling from Savage to Piney Orchard is pretty nice. Point Pleasant Beach Tavern (aka the Beach Bar) Location: 1750 Marley Avenue, Glen Burnie, Maryland 21060. Take exit 22 to Aris Allen Boulevard (route 665) southeast. Turn right (south) at Solomons Island Road (route 2). At the traffic circle in Friendship, take the third exit onto Friendship Road (route 261) heading east towards North Beach. Notes: This area may be called Holland Point Park or Tracy's Landing. Take exit 7 to Crain Highway North (route 3) heading southwest. Immediately after passing Defense Highway (route 450), look for parking on the side of the road. Notes: Just before the bridge over Patuxent River on the northeast side is some concrete rubble that starts a steep path that leads to a trail that goes to the river. Several boat ramps on the north side and a beach launch on the south side. A better alternative might be launching from Solleys Cove. Shadyside Location: 1355 East West Shady Side Road, Shady Side, Maryland 20764, Anne Arundel County ADC map 5656 H5 Phone: 410-222-7317 Date: Unexplored Directions: From the Baltimore beltway (highway 695), take highway 97 south to highway 50 east. There are two walking trails at the Center: the Discovery Trail and the Java History Trail. Take exit 22 to Aris Allen Boulevard (route 665) southeast. Turn right (south) at Solomons Island Road (route 2). Turn left (southeast) on Central Avenue East (route 214). Marina is on the right side of the road just after crossing the bridge. Take exit 7 to Crain Highway North (route 3) heading southwest. Before reaching the Fort Mc Henry Tunnel tunnel, get in rightmost lane.
I might also express driving time relative to If you were to ask me what I like most about Maryland, I wouldn't say the weather, the cities, or the people. While my home state of California has quite a bit of water, it is much different than the Chesapeake. For more information, see Challenge Weekend 2010 and October 9, 2010. Notes: Parking is abundant and if there isn't a restroom there, then there is one near the visitor center. Note that several parts of Toms Cove and/or the shoreline may be off limits at certain times of the year. On the eastern shore, highway 50 will split into highway 50 and highway 301. Unfortunately, the maps instead indicate it is only about a mile long below Chincoteague Road. In "Maryland and Delaware Canoe Trails," Ed Gertler recommends that the water level be at least 334 cubic feet per second and 2.4 gage height feet. Veer left (south) onto Cresap Mill Road, Southeast. Veer left (southeast) onto Oldtown Road, Southeast (route 51). Consider eating at Anne Arundel County has 533 miles of shoreline, according to Volunteers get the nearly forgotten Franklin State Park ready to open. There is no parking lot but you can park along the side of the road in the neighborhood. They share a huge parking lot with the Point Crab House and Grill but this lot fills up during popular dining times. If you don't want to pay, you can launch at Spriggs Farm Park which is nearby. My call was eventually returned and I was told to call them back. After 0.2 mile, you'll come to Homeport Drive on the left (southeast) but you can't make a left turn so you'll have to go up a ways then make a U-turn. Pay special attention to where you launch as it is easy to miss on the return. Take exit 22 to Aris T Allen Boulevard (route 665) southeast. Hilltop Lane will eventually turn into Tyler Avenue. Turn left (south) on Furnace Branch Road (route 270). Take the Pennsylvania Avenue (route 4; 11A) exit heading east, away from Washington D. Follow for 1.6 miles past Crain Highway South (route 301). Piney Orchard Location: Piney Orchard Parkway, Anne Arundel County ADC map 5291 C1 Phone: Date: March 31, 2010 Directions: From the Baltimore beltway (highway 695), take highway 97 south to exit 7, route 32. Note that the road will change names to Piney Orchard Parkway. Shortly after the Shell gas station, turn left (east) on Herald Harbor Road. 0.8 mile after crossing Central Avenue (route 214), turn left (east) onto South River Clubhouse Road. The main road accessible to the public will bend to the right (south). Truxton Heights Park Location: 273 Hilltop Lane, Annapolis, Maryland 21403 but don't go by the address alone..will just get you close; Anne Arundel County ADC map 20 J12 or map 5417 A5 Phone: 410-263-7958 Date: August 28, 2016 Directions: From the Baltimore beltway (highway 695), take highway 97 south to highway 50 east. Veer left onto Truxton Park Road (there may not be a sign) and head downhill to the boat launch. There is a small sandy beach to the left of the concrete launch. This is probably the best place in my area for beginners. I know one can launch a kayak here but I believe you'll need special permission to do so. This turn occurs before Southeast Boulevard merges with Back River Neck Road. This is the first left after crossing over highway 295. Just southeast of the Harbor Hospital, the (Little) Patapsco River that flows through Patapsco State Park and separates Baltimore and Anne Arundel County enters into the (Big) Patapsco River. 20 minutes from Arbutus and 30 minutes from Savage. Park at the northernmost end as close to South Clinton Street as possible and then carry or cart your boat to the ramp. Usually, I just drive east on Boston Street until I see signs for highway 895 south.
The latter isn't nearly as clean as the pristine waters of California but it is significantly warmer in the summer. Turn right (southwest) on Memorial Park Drive into Memorial Park and Recreational Area. According to , A boat ramp is available for launching power boats but a permit is required. From what I've heard on the kayaker website, the answer is yes. NASA Wallops Date: August 14, 2010 The NASA Wallops Visitor Center has a boat ramp that provides access to Mosquito Creek, just south of route 175 on the mainland before crossing over the Queens Town Channel on the way to Chincoteague Island. Stop by at the visitor center to find out where you can paddle and land. Wallops Pond Location: Wattsville, Virginia Date: August 14, 2010 Directions to Chincoteague: From the Baltimore Beltway (highway 695), take highway 97 south to highway 50 east. There is another, much smaller side of this pond on the other side of Chincoteague Road but I don't know if the two sides connect under the road and if they do, I don't know if one can paddle from one side to the other. Restroom on other side of parking lot across from boat ramp. One can check the level at Potomac River water level at Cumberland. Oldtown Location: Oldtown, Maryland Date: June 30, 2014 Phone: Directions: From where the Baltimore beltway (highway 695) and highway 95 meet on the southern side, take highway 695 clockwise. After 91 miles, take exit 1A on the left to highway 68 west, to Flintstone. While it may seem like there are a lot of public launch sites in the county, the truth of the matter is that if you look at the ratio of the number launch sites to the number of miles of shoreline, the resulting value is quite low. Launch early so you don't have to carry your boat too far in case there are others also intent on launching. This is a good launch point for a night paddle since no hours are posted indicating that the park is ever closed. Carry or cart boats about an eighth of a mile to the water. Access to a pretty calm and narrow stretch of the Magothy River and Beachwood Branch. See Magothy River Water Trail (as of 2017) and my August 7, 2016 blog. Turn right (east) on Fort Smallwood Road (route 173). Once in the park, signs will guide you to the kayak launch beach. I think Fort Smallwood has the biggest speedbumps in the county. As of June 2012, there is a $6 entrance fee but it is free for military and veterans. See my October 1, 2014 and June 26, 2017 trip report. Seems like it would have been a lot easier if they just told me how much they charge. Follow Homeport Drive to the end, passing through a traffic circle. Aris T Allen Boulevard eventually turns into Forest Drive. Turn left (east) on Waysons Corner Annapolis (route 408, Mount Zion Marlboro Road). Immediately after crossing over route 4, turn left before the Texaco gas station. Follow for 3.6 miles to the bridge over the Little Patuxent River. No parking on the side of the road around the river. Smith’s Marina Location: 529 Ridgeley Road, Crownsville 21032, Anne Arundel County ADC map 14 G11 or map 5293 H4 Phone: 410-923-3444, 410-987-9370 Date: July 11, 2014 Directions: From the Baltimore beltway (highway 695), take highway 97 south. Less than a tenth of a mile after the bend, turn left (east) onto Dock Road. Signs indicate this launch area is only for Annapolis residents only but I have heard this is not enforced. Take exit 22 to Aris T Allen Boulevard (route 665) southeast. Notes: Sometimes this place is spelled "Truxtun" and often the word "Heights" is not included in the name. It is sheltered from the wind and waves, has an easy beach launch, restroom, and picnic area. It is a 200 yard carry from the parking lot to the river. This is a much better rest stop than it is a launch site. Follow for 0.4 miles, crossing over the railroad tracks on your left. Baltimore Boating Center Location: 2015 Turkey Point Road, Essex, 21221, Baltimore County ADC map 38 B12 Phone: 410-687-2000, 410-404-3013 (cell) Date: July 19, 2008 Directions: From where the Baltimore beltway (highway 695) and highway 95 meet, take highway 695 counterclockwise (east) to exit 36, Southeast Boulevard (route 702). Take the first left which is the on-ramp to highway 295 south. If paddling up the (Little) Patapsco River, beware of fishing lines and crab net lines that hang from Hanover Street, Potee Street, and Patapsco Avenue. Paddling up the (Little) Patapsco River is scenic and natural although paddling gets difficult once crossing under highway 695 due to water depth (too shallow). Instead of veering right to remain on Mountain Road (route 177), continue straight on Pinehurst Road, entering the park. That's why I carry my Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) card. There might also be a boat ramp open to the public just south of the beach... There are restrooms but not in the parking area for the boat launch so catch one of the restrooms on the way in. It is a little too pristine for my taste...somewhat Columbia-ish, but that is just my opinion. When returning, look for the building with the line of blue near the top. Dundee Creek Marina at Gunpowder Falls State Park Location: 7400 Graces Quarters Road, Middle River, Maryland 21220; Gunpowder Falls State Park, Baltimore County ADC map 38 K2. From the boat ramp, there is a trail that begins with some scrap concrete on the north side of the parking lot. Hart-Miller Island State Park Also known as Hart Miller (without the hyphen). The area is an essential stop-over for spring and fall migrations, providing birds with stable food and shelter.
Entrance fee is $6 but free for active-duty military and veterans with ID. Ferry Bar Park Location: Cherry Hill, across from the Harbor Hospital, Baltimore County ADC map 43 C6 Date: Unexplored from land Directions: From where the Baltimore beltway (highway 695) and highway 95 meet, take highway 95 north. As far as I know, you can park in the lot near the ramp but if you have a trailer, you should probably park in the lot uphill. It can be accessed from Rocky Point Park, North Point State Park, or Rudy's Marina, all listed on this page. Beginners should not launch from here as the current can be very strong (2 mph) as soon as you leave the harbor.
