Speed dating teaching strategy
By the end of the first week I was cleaning out my old files, putting my old unit binders into storage, and making lists of things I would need to start my Modeling classroom.I knew my eleventh year teaching was going to be one of the most challenging of my career as I implemented these changes, but I felt CMC was going to help me best meet the needs of the learners in my classroom.
Last year, I decided to add a new element to my poetry unit, Poetry Speed-dating.This simple activity allows students to explore some poetry in a low-stakes way. Find a variety of poetry books and anthologies for students to browse. You can collect anthologies from the library, set up stations with access to various poetry websites you like, or have students bring in books of poetry from home. I remind students to write down the names of any poems or poets that strike them, but beyond that, it’s a free reading day. When the instructor chooses, students pass the whiteboard to another group. While students are whiteboarding, ask a few (or all) groups to include a deliberate mistake in their solutions and then have either a presentation, board meeting or art show in which students are asked to evaluate each solution and find and correct the mistake.Halfway through the lesson the students swap roles so everyone has a chance to answer different questions.
The thought of completely changing what I had been doing in my classroom for almost ten years was daunting.
Then, I designed the file to print the correct number of significant figures on the back of the card when printed double sided .
And, I hope there weren't any mistakes on the cards because I was sort of in a rush to get them made.
As instructors become more confident in utilizing whiteboard strategies the process will become easier for both teacher and learner.
Students within a group each complete the same problem on four separate small (individual) whiteboards.
Half of the class sits at a desk, the other half of the class moves around the desks.
